Day of Atonement-Annual Feast Leviticus 16

For some old fashion gospel singing go here: http://www.eleventhavenuebaptistchurch.com/music.htm

Leviticus 16:29 "And this shall be a statute forever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: v20 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord."

I found it interesting in the passage above when he said afflict your souls, and do not work at all. I expect that would suit our generation just fine in many cases.

That however is not the meaning of this passage. It is a day to be free from sin. It is a day to be clean from all your sins before the Lord v30. It must have been a great day for Israel. Yet, year after year they must come back. The New Testament is a once-for-all cleansing, although, we are to repent of our sins and confess them before the Lord. We are nevertheless cleansed of sin when Christ is accepted as Savior: past, present and future.

Hebrews 10:16-19 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, ad in their minds will I wrte them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, breathren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus."

The Old Testament is so good to have. It instructs us and helps us understand the New. It gives us types and shadows...examples to explain the thinking of God and our position with him. It displays his holiness and our sinfulness but bridging this gap is always the blood shed for our sins. First the blood of the animals (pointing to the sacrifice of Jesus) but then the finality of the blood of the lamb of God. It requires only that one come in faith and admit their sinful condition, repent (turn from) and in faith accept Christ as Savior.

Hebrews 10:10 "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Psalm 40:3 "And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even prise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord."
