Leviticus 20:6 "And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people."
The punishment for following a wizard is to be cut off from ones people. This many see like a small thing at first, to be cut off. Remember that they were a community and relied on each other for support. The tabernacle where they received forgiveness for sin and made the offerings was with the people. Sin of verse 6 would have them cut off from all this.
We take it very casually these days and even smile at the funny stories but it is a very serious thing with God and amounts to dealing with demons and such called familiar spirits here.
Exodus 22:18 "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."
Proverbs 4:19 "The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble."
